How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Start from local searches

Every listing came up in Los Angeles County searches for sewer repair, sewer line replacement, trenchless sewer repair or sewer lateral repair.

  2. 2

    Keep sewer companies

Restoration firms, general home inspectors, supply stores, HVAC-only shops, septic pumpers and public agencies are removed. Companies wrongly removed are added back by hand.

  3. 3

    Mark trenchless work

Companies whose name or listed services point to trenchless work get the Trenchless badge and are listed first.

  4. 4

    Place them honestly

Companies with a street address go on their city page. Service-area companies without one are listed once on the county page.

Listings are built from public business information and checked against an Los Angeles County address or service area. Ratings and review counts are shown as published and are refreshed when the directory is rebuilt. We do not verify contractor licenses, so check every contractor with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) before you sign.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add photos. A person checks every claim. Published by John Bennett.

How to choose a sewer repair company in Los Angeles County

Most sewer trouble in Los Angeles County comes down to an aging private lateral: the pipe from your house to the public main. In the prewar and postwar neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles, the valleys and the Gateway cities that pipe is often original clay or cast iron, and tree roots, cracked joints and scale are the usual causes of slow drains and backups. Newer South County homes mostly have plastic pipe, which resists roots but can still sag or separate.

Start with a camera inspection. A camera run down the line shows whether you are looking at a root intrusion that cleaning will clear for a while, a single bad section that a spot repair can fix, a line that can be lined from the inside, or a pipe that has to be replaced. Ask for the video and the footage marks. Without them, quotes for very different jobs look alike.

Know your options. Trenchless repair works through small access pits: pipe lining (CIPP) builds a new pipe inside the old one, and pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through while breaking the old one apart. Traditional sewer line replacement digs a trench. Trenchless often saves driveways, hardscape and landscaping; digging can still be the right call for a collapsed or badly sagging line.

Check who is responsible and who pulls the permit. In most LA County cities the homeowner owns the lateral up to the public main, and repairs usually need a city or sewer-agency permit. Ask your agency where your responsibility ends.

Compare like with like. Get two or three written quotes with the same scope: method, length, depth, cleanouts, permit and restoration. Check each contractor's license with the California CSLB and ask what warranty they give in writing. Our cost guide covers general price ranges.
